At Williams Martial Arts & Fitness (WMAF) we believe karate should be taught in a safe, disciplined, constructive and fun environment. We strive to bring out the best in every student through positive motivation, structure and consistency.
Beginning students learn the fundamentals of karate-do. This not only includes the physical aspects of karate: body awareness, coordination and strength training but also skills necessary in all other aspects of life: listening, self-control, self-esteem and respect.
Once the student has progressed to a certain level, we can begin to build on their expertise and introduce more complex physical skills as well as require more disciplined behavior. It is important for them to master the introductory skills before being exposed to more complex tasks.
Once a student has been in the program for a while, we build on these basic fundamentals and we begin to expect more from each student. At this point we start teaching the more advanced katas (forms) and the explanations of these movements. We also introduce more advanced drills to help each student perfect their own personal skills.
As each student advances through the system, we monitor his or her progress. We believe it is important that each student be evaluated on his or her own ability and not be compared to their peers. While minimal skills are required to advance to the next level, willingness and attitude play a greater role. Each student should be improving on themselves and making an effort to do their best. If a student shows concerted effort to do better, he or she will have no trouble advancing through the system.
We make every effort to communicate with the student and their parents on a regular basis, however, if you have questions regarding your or your child’s progress, please feel free to contact the head instructor at any time. Each student is important and we want to provide the best possible guidance throughout his or her karate-do journey.
