The WMAF Star Service Award is earned by those Sho Dan students who have successfully completed the Ni Dan requirements as outlined for those under the age of sixteen. These students are not eligible to promote to Ni Dan until they are at least age sixteen. Instead, they may earn the Star Service Award for each year they adhere to these requirements and exemplify those qualities we expect out of a WMAF Black Belt.

The requirements they have fulfilled include the following:

Hold the rank of Sho Dan for over one year.

Have attended class for an average of twice weekly for one year as evidenced by attendance card.

Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of all skills and all Kata up to and including Sho Dan Ho and Sho Dan.

Knowledge of Weapons Kata.

Maintain a regular schedule of assistant teaching. Sensei assigns a specific class in which they are expected to assist.

Regularly attend special training seminars (i.e. Kata, Sparring, etc.)

Participate and assist at school sponsored events (i.e. tournaments)

Provide service to the dojo as outlined by Sensei (i.e. helping with birthday parties, cleaning, performing administrative tasks, watching younger karate-ka during events, etc.)

Each candidate must be able to assist in class by proficiently executing the following:

Pull attendance cards, but NOT mark the cards

Quietly and orderly line the class up for principles

“Coach” one of the class students in leading warm-up.

Count basic

Count the Pinan Kata

Quietly assist the students in gathering their things and quietly lining up for dismissal.

The star patch is designed to be affixed to the black belt with fabric glue or to be sewn. It should be attached to the belt so it is visible on the back of the belt. Any subsequent stars should be attached radiating from the middle on alternating sides.
