We'll Be Back, Says Team!
Friday morning came bright and early for the members of the WMAF Arnold Martial Arts Festival competition team and their families. Gathering at the dojo at 6:30 am, they soon left for Columbus, Ohio, home of the world-famous Arnold Sports Festival, an annual event encompassing the field of sports and fitness, sponsored by Hollywood legend and current Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. After a good nights sleep, the team arrived at the venue on Saturday morning, where traditional karatekas shared the floor with competitors in a multitude of other styles, including Judo, Brazilian Jujutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Capoeria, Kung Fu and Boxing. Shihan Williams served as one of the officials, while Sensei Karen and some of the team parents were quickly recruited to work the tables in both rings. The day went well for WMAF's team, with Danielle Pope winning a bronze medal for kata, a silver medal for kumite and a gold medal for kobudo. Danielle was followed by Jason Villanueva, who took bronze in kata. Meghan Chatfield was up next, taking gold in kata and kobudo and a silver medal in kumite. The team ended their winning streak with Dean Villanueva taking a gold medal in kata and a silver medal in kumite. After the conclusion of the tournament, the team shared a hearty meal, and the team members enjoyed themselves at the hotel's indoor pool. The next day, the Williams contingent spent a few hours perusing the Arnold Sports Festival, finding the time to see such disparate events as gymnastics, bodybuilding, weightlifting, fencing, table tennis, cheerleading and competition dance. As the group prepared to leave the convention center to return home, who should walk by but the "Governator" himself, capping off a very memorable event for all who attended.
